When a massive thunderstorm, wayward hurricane, or damaging hail rolls through the Scottsdale area, it’s important to be as prepared as possible. Keeping your home and family safe means taking extra precautions ahead of time. At Zona Restoration, we highly recommend taking these three actions to help safely ride out the storm. While not all damage from storms is preventable, following these extra precautions can help make even the smallest difference.

How to Protect Your Home & Family When Storms Strike

Protect Your Windows

If you’re expecting a damaging hail storm or hurricane-force winds, there are steps you can take to help prevent any major storm or water damage. Plywood can be easily cut to the shape and size of your windows, creating a hard barrier between the weather and your expensive window panes. Check your windows each year during spring cleaning and maintenance to make sure all leaks are sealed properly. Even adding some extra caulk can help strengthen the window glass and frame.

Unplug All Appliances

It’s happened to all of us. A powerful storm comes through Scottsdale and we inevitably lose power. One of the best ways to protect your home from a power surge or unexpected fire is by unplugging all appliances. This includes the washer and dryer, television, computer, stove, and more. If you know ahead of time that damaging weather is on its way, charge all cell phones and devices so you can still use them throughout the storm.

Move to a Safe Space

When floods are threatening your Scottsdale home, the best thing you can do is move to a safe space. Sometimes this means moving to higher ground, such as a second or third level in your home. It could also mean driving to a flood-free area before the storm strikes your community. Be sure to have a bag packed ahead of time with items like bottled water, snacks, a flashlight, and other necessities. Don’t forget to bring your pets with you too.
